Cam Newton of Auburn is not on my Heisman Trophy ballot – Open Mike – Orlando Sentinel
I am about to fill out my Heisman Trophy ballot and Cam Newton of Auburn will be nowhere on it.
Hate to say I told you so, but I’ve never been more secure about my decision to leave Cam Newton off my Heisman ballot than I was a few days ago. That’s when the NCAA determined that, yes, Newton’s father Cecil, a preacher in Atlanta, shopped his son in a pay-for-play scheme before Newton signed with Auburn. Do I need to remind everyone of the “integrity” clause in the Heisman’s mission statement? It says, “The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.”
What you mean is that you have more knowledge than the SEC and the NCAA so you can judge and prosecute to your heart’s content.
I wish you the best, but I disagree.
At this time there is no blemish on Cam Newton in the eyes of the organizations that run intercollegiate sports. In your infinite wisdom, Mr. Bianchi, you have chosen to disregard the knowledge and expertise of those in control and exercise your own. So be it.
I am glad you are not on any juries that deal with life and death matters. People die needlessly when people have such strongly held biases in sight of the truth and due process.
What is really the issue here is your interest in gaining a name for yourself based on your opinion, and not on your skill. I am aiding you in your quest and it makes me ill to do so. But I also feel that shallow thinking like yours needs to be exposed.
I hope you can sleep with your conscience. Best wishes.
