SEC Men’s Basketball Update & Predictions-February 6, 2011

We are at the halfway point in the SEC Men’s Basketball race and thing have begun to get pretty interesting.  Some things have played out to plan and others are surprising, especially the fact that Alabama has the best conference record at 7-1.  The Tide will get the chance to earn their stripes in the second half and that is when we will separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Here are the standings as of tonight:

SEC East

Florida             7-2
Tennessee        5-3
Georgia           5-4
Kentucky          4-4
South Carolina  4-4
Vanderbilt         4-4

SEC West

Alabama          7-1
Miss. St.         4-4
Arkansas        4-5
Ole Miss         3-5
Auburn          1-7

It is no surprise that the West is apparently weaker than the East, but there have been some surprising West victories, especially the Ole Miss victory over Kentucky and the Arkansas thumping of Vandy in Nashville.

Here are this week’s games with my predictions:

Tuesday February 8
Xavier at Georgia-The Dogs will win this one at hom

Tennessee at Kentucky-UT goes down in flames at Rupp

Wednesday February 9
Florida at South Carolina-Gators are surprised and lose at Carolina

Arkansas at Miss. St.-Hogs lose to State and Relardo Sidney

LSU at Ole Miss-Ole Miss wins at home versus the Tigers

Thursday February 10
Alabama at Vanderbilt

Vandy wins a close win at historic Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville

Saturday February 12
Kentucky at Vanderbilt-Vandy makes it three in a row on CBS versus the Cats

LSU at Arkansas-More frustration for the Tigers at Bud Walton

Ole Miss at Alabama-Tide wins at home versus the Rebels

Georgia at South Carolina-Gamecocks pull the upset at home

Tennessee at Florida-Vols surprise the Gators in the O-Dome

Miss. St. at Auburn-Auburn pulls the upset in the Auburn arena
