SEC Tournament Preview-May 2011

It’s that time of year again and the best three teams in the country will all be in Hoover this week to play for the SEC Baseball Tournament championship.

The most recent poll show South Carolina, Florida and Vanderbilt 1-2-3 in the national rankings; not a surprise to me or to many who watch baseball in this part of the country.  I will have to admit that I have enjoyed needling the writers at Baseball America since they seem to follow baseball in the western half of our country a little more closely than the eastern half.  I hope their writers enjoy their time in Birmingham.  Be sure to go to Dreamland and enjoy the ribs while there.

Here are the pairings for the tournament’s initial games:

Alabama versus Arkansas

Mississippi State versus Florida

Auburn versus South Carolina

Georgia versus Vanderbilt

The play is set up into 2-four team pools with Arkansas and Florida in one pool and Vandy and South Carolina in the second pool.

Here are my initial predictions:

Bama defeats Arkansas and State defeats Florida

Auburn defeats USC and Vandy defeats Georgia

Florida will come back through the losers bracket and face Vandy on Sunday in the championship.

Who will be the winner?  I’ll tell you that on Saturday.

Also, be sure to read my recent post on the SEC Player of the year, Pitcher of the year, Coach of the year and Freshman of the year.

See you at the Ballpark!
